Union Station and car rentals Mississauga
Union Station is the central hub of transportation for the GTA. It is located in the heart of the city, on Front and Bay Streets. Recognized as the busiest passenger transportation facility in Canada, Union Station servers nearly a quarter of a million passengers every day, including thousands of out-of-town commuters. While the age of rail travel is long gone, Union Station remains an important part of Ontario’s history, culture and commute. Don’t miss your chance to stop by and tour the premises during your upcoming car rentals Mississauga vacation.
The biggest and the best
Toronto’s Union Station was originally built back in 1858. The current version of the station opened to the public on August 6, 1927. A lavish ceremony, which included a ribbon cutting presentation by Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, commemorated the event. The largest and most opulent railway station ever erected in Canada, Toronto’s Union Station is comprised of three distinct sections facing Front Street West. The building covers the entire south side of the block between Bay Street in the east and York Street in the west. It is over 229 meters long. TransCanada Car rentals Mississauga travelers are often amazed by the sheer size of the building – the Front Street facade features 22 limestone columns, each measuring over 12 meters high.
It doesn’t get any busier than this
Union Station is a major destination within the VIA Rail’s Windsor/Quebec City Corridor. This is because it is integrated into a number of important rail routes. Union Station is the terminus for the transcontinental Canadian railway; it also hosts VIA-Amtrack co-run trains from New York and Chicago. TransCanada Car Rentals Mississauga travelers will also find connections to Toronto’s subway network inside the station, as well as rail service on the Northlander to Cochrane.
A quick tour through Union Station
TransCanada Car Rentals Mississauga highly encourages travelers to visit Union Station as part of an upcoming vacation to the GTA. Inside the station, travelers will find an impressive space known as the Great Hall. The room boasts arched ceilings and vitrified Gustavino tile floors. Carved stone details can be found throughout the room, along with large, arched, composite windows on the eastern and western walls. Names of various Canadian cities are carved three quarters of the way up the walls, marking possible destinations for passengers embarking from Union Station back in 1921.
After purchasing tickets in the Great Hall, customers of TransCanada Car Rentals Mississauga are asked to head south through the Hall and onto departure ramps. Stairs on either side of the concourse lead travelers to the platforms. Arrivals to the station take different stairs down from the platforms in order to make their way into the Great Hall. A number of offices are also housed in the upper floors of the Station, surrounding the Great Hall. In fact, the composite glass windows at either end of the Hall are actually glassed in corridors – look closely and you might catch a glimpse of an office worker walking by.
