Putting Canada on the zoological map
The Toronto Zoo is the third largest zoological park in the world, ranking up with facilities in San Diego, Detroit and San Francisco. Animals at the zoo are displayed both indoors (in tropical pavilions) and outdoors (in naturalist environments) depending on the species and habitat requirements. Special viewing stations have been created at each exhibit, providing zoo-goers with multiple sightlines into the animal enclosures. For ease of navigation, the zoo is divided into six zoo-geographic areas: Indo-Malaya, Africa, the Americas, Australasia, Eurasia and the Canadian Domain. Future Toronto airport car rental travelers will also be able to check out the North Zoo Redevelopment area, which will feature updated exhibits in the Canadian Domain (Tundra Trek) and the conversion of the Americans exhibit into the Tropical Americas.
Animal highlights - from the African Plains to the Canadian Tundra
- Indo-Malaya: This area of the world is hot all year round - a fact that posed many problems for zoo designers in the cool Canadian climate. In order to simulate the climate, Toronto airport car rental travelers are invited inside the Malayan Woods Pavilion where they will meet colourful butterflies and the illusive leopards. During the summer, Toronto airport car rental travelers will find Indian rhinos roaming outside, along with the Malayan Tapir and the rare Sumatran tigers.
- Africa: The Africa section of the park features a wide variety of animals, including zebras, lions, elephants and crowned cranes. Toronto airport car rental travelers are invited to stroll down the African themed pathway to find dwarf crocodiles, meerkats and bats. Inside the African Rainforest Pavilion lies the world's largest indoor gorilla exhibit.
- Canadian Domain: Situated in the Rouge Valley, this section of the park is home to animals commonly found in the Canadian north. Residents include ox, bison, arctic wolves, grizzly bears and bald eagles. Moose, cougars, racoons and elk also roam the area.
- The Americas: In this area of the zoo, Toronto airport car rental travelers will find animals from both North and South America. Habitats like volcanic mountain chains and mangrove swamps are highlighted inside the American Pavilion, which houses an endless variety of frogs, insects and snakes. Outside, Toronto airport car rental travelers will find jaguars, spider monkeys and flamingos.
- Australasia: This unique exhibit is home to many animals that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Kangaroos, wallabies, emus, wombats and more can be found in the outside enclosures, while inside the Great Barrier Reef exhibit, Toronto airport car rental travelers will find live coral, sea horses and jellyfish.
- Eurasia: This section of the park is home to red pandas, snow leopards, Siberian tigers and Japanese macaques. This area is currently in the redevelopment stage.
Every effort counts
While the Toronto Zoo is a great family vacation destination, it is also one of the world's most important refugees for endangered species. Over the years, the zoo has made considerable efforts to conserve and propagate at-risk animals from all around the world with notable success. Some of the most popular births at the zoo have included three Sumatran tigers in 2003 (the first of their kind to be born in Canada), two female West African Dwarf Crocodiles in 2004 and two rare snow lions in 2007.
The Toronto Zoo is open year round. Admission is $20 for adults and $12 for children. To learn more, visit www.torontozoo.com.
