Follow this up with a left onto St-Urbain and a right onto St-Paul. Hang another right onto St Francois-Xavier and you should be able to see the theatre on the east side of the street.

A quick history of the Centaur

The Centaur Theatre was founded in 1969 by Maurice Podbrey, and was initially housed in the Old Stock Exchange Building (bet you didn’t know Canada’s Stock Exchange was originally located in Montreal!). The theatre company’s breakthrough production was David Fennario’s play, On the Job. Fennario would later unveil another play at the Centaur, Balconville, which would bring international acclaim to the tiny Montreal company. Following in Fennario’s footsteps were other Montreal greats like Vittorio Rossi, David Gow, Linda Griffith and David Freedman. Important international directors and playwrights from Russia, Ireland and France also played a role in the theatre’s development, as did the famed South African dramatist Athol Fugard. In the past decade, the Centaur has produced eighteen world premieres of Montreal plays, as well as launching the annual Wildside Festival. The Centaur Theatre has won nine Les Masque Awards, including Best Actress, Revelation, and Best English-Language Production.
