Finding a new hom
The Hockey Hall of Fame was established In Kingston, Ontario in 1943 by James T. Sutherland. Sutherland believed that Kingston was the birthplace of hockey. It was originally called the “International Hockey Hall of Fame” and its mandate was to honor exceptional hockey players and to raise funds for a permanent location. When Sutherland died in 1955, Kingston lost its major advocate to make Kingston the Hockey Hall of Fame’s permanent location. In 1958, it moved to a Toronto location and in 1961 the museum had its first permanent location at the Exhibition Place. However, as the collection grew, there was need for a larger location. In 1993, the Hockey Hall of Fame relocated to a former Bank of Montreal building and this is where it still is today when you visit with your car rental in Toronto.

Each year in June a committee comprised of players, coaches, and other officials meet to determine new honorees. The members that are eventually honored are inducted into the Hall of Fame in an annual ceremony which takes place in the Hockey Hall of Fame Museum in November. In 2008 there were 240 players, 97 builders, and 15 on- ice officials that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
